Screen-Free Activities for Toddlers on a Rainy Day

It's raining. You've already done breakfast. It's 9am. Your toddler is looking at you like you're supposed to have a plan. Here are some ideas that actually work.

Sensory bins

Fill a bin or a big bowl with something interesting and let them go. Dried rice, dried pasta, kinetic sand, water beads, or even just water with some cups and spoons. Add small toys, scoops, or funnels and you've bought yourself a solid 30 to 45 minutes. Put a towel or a sheet under it if you're worried about the floor.

Playdough

Always a good call. Set out some tools, cookie cutters, or loose parts like toothpicks and buttons and let them create whatever they want. No instructions needed. If you want to make it feel more special, make a fresh batch together first. The making is half the fun.

Indoor obstacle course

Couch cushions on the floor, a pillow to jump over, a tunnel made from a blanket over two chairs. Toddlers will run this course approximately forty times and think it's the best day of their life. Takes five minutes to set up and costs nothing.

Painting

Watercolors are the lowest-mess option. Finger painting is the most fun. Either way, put down some newspaper or a plastic tablecloth, hand them a brush, and step back. Don't direct it. Just let them paint whatever they want and tell them it's beautiful, because it is.

Baking something together

Even a simple recipe like muffins or banana bread gives a toddler a lot to do: pouring, stirring, counting scoops. They get to eat the result, which makes it feel like the whole morning was worth it. For them and for you.

Reading marathon

Stack up a pile of books and just read. Let them pick. Read the same one three times if they want. Rainy days are made for this.

A learning kit

Rainy days are honestly the perfect time to open something new. Our Learn + Play Kit Monthly Subscription arrives each month with a full set of hands-on activities ready to go, no prep required. When the weather turns and you need something to do, it's already there waiting.

Rainy days are not the enemy. They're just an excuse to slow down and actually play. You've got this.
